Once again, Harriet Goldin is organizing our annual LWVN Book Review as a virtual discussion, centered on a good read. The meeting will take place on Wednesday, April 16 at 7:30 p.m. As a change of pace from our usual non-fiction books, she has suggested the novel The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride. The book is a NY Times bestseller, and is on many “best books” lists; it has themes and issues that are relevant today including class, race, and DEI (diversity, equity, and inclusion).

The novel tells the story of Black and Jewish residents of the Chicken Hill neighborhood of Pottstown, Pennsylvania in the 1920s and 30s. Here is more information about the book.

The book is available in local libraries, on Kindle (free), and at Amazon in hard cover and paperback.

Harriet will also forward several current articles relating to the themes to participants, who may choose to lead short discussions about them.

Contact president@lwv-needham for more information. RSVP is required.
