LWV-Needham Opening Meeting: Ballot Question 3

Transgender Rights and Ballot Question 3: What’s It All About?
The November 6 election will include Ballot Question 3, which is a referendum to repeal an existing law that guarantees civil rights protections for transgender people in Massachusetts. A yes vote is to keep the existing law and a no vote is to repeal the law.
We will begin at 6:30 pm with substantial snacks and chat, followed by a welcome to the start of another League year.
Next we will address areas relative to the ballot question. The goal is to understand the ballot question and to understand “transgender,” to learn what the ballot question is all about.
Karen Price and Carol Patey, members of the LWVMA Ballot Question Study Committee, will discuss the ballot question itself and the mechanics behind the so-called “referendum petition”—a citizen-initiated process to repeal existing laws in Massachusetts that has not been used since 1990.
Tracy McKay, one of the leaders of the Needham Transgender Rights Coalition, will describe her experience having two transgender children. She will discuss what the ballot question and its outcome means to her family.
We also plan to present points that business leaders have expressed about the ballot question through a short video.
Questions and discussion are welcome after each presentation.
Many of you attended the June 6 education forum co-sponsored by LWVN, as part of the Needham Transgender Rights Coalition. The Coalition will host another education forum on Oct 22. The LWV-Needham opening meeting will complement these forums.
