The League Year 2022-23 In Review

The 2022-2023 League year (July 2022-June 2023) featured mostly in-person and hybrid events.

  • For the third year in a row, LWV-Needam was the largest local League in Massachusetts as of the annual February 1 roster update, with 201 members.
  • Supported LWV-Needham at Needham High School Club.
  • Supported Action Teams for immigration, gender equity, and housing.
  • Participated in the Needham Parade on July 4, 2022, received Grand Marshall Award trophy.
  • For state primary and general elections (fall 2022): Voter Guide, three candidate forums, website gateway for information on the elections.
  • Voter registration/information for voters at North Hill, the Kendrick, and Harvest Fair.
  • Opening meeting with Debbie Schmill from the Becca Schmill Foundation.
  • Several advocacy events advocating for bills state-wide.
  • Held League-wide Winterfest/Planning meeting, with a focus on Needham’s housing plan and climate action plan.
  • Participated in national Day of Action at Needham History Center and Museum.

  • For local election (April 2023); encouraged people to run through posts and “How to Run” training, Voter Guide, Candidates Night, website gateway for information on the election.
  • LWV-Needham at Needham High School Club produced video “Why Voting Matters” featuring elected officials to encourage youth voting.
  • Co-produced (with the Needham Channel) 24 get-out-the-vote public service announcements (PSAs) shared via Facebook and Twitter for the Fall 2022 State primary and general elections and the April 2023 local elections.
  • Town Meeting Warrant Meetings and 25-year awards.
  • Annual Meeting with speaker Susan Retick. Greta Schirmer award to Stacie Shapiro, lifetime members Maureen McCaffrey, Sally Toran, Sharon & Len Solzberg.
  • Kicked off preliminary work on upcoming Needham Affordable Housing Trust Fund study; the study was approved at our Annual Meeting.
  • Met with Needham’s state legislators on Zoom.
  • Co-hosted (with Needham High Sch00l) NHS Civics Showcase with over 100 students presenting their advocacy projects.
